My family came from Tennessee. The spelling of Shoate and or Choate are both used in my family. They are allegedly descended from Choctaw and African people. There is some speculation that they were listed under the Choctaw Freedman rolls but are actually Cherokee and black. Their descendants currently live in the same place now Spiro Oklahoma (Ft.
