In my opinion Mr. Smith's article was a personal attack on all people of color including us Cherokees who he said the Freedmen should leave alone. The Muskogee Phoenix should hear from the many readers in Northeast Oklahoma that don't appreciate being treated this way. Mr. Smith is obviously more concerned with maintaining the last vestige of American apartheid than the interests of the Cherokee Citizens he says should be left alone by the Freedmen Cherokee Citizens.
