Skullyville Freedmen Project
In honor of African American History Month, I have chosen to document the community from which my Choctaw Freedmen ancestors came. They were part of a Freedmen Community in Skullyville, a community that no longer exists, but it was one of the official districts of the Choctaw Nation. Dozens of Freedmen lived in Skullyville, mostly in Braden, Brazil, Oak Lodge, and Spiro. My goal is to bring forth more of this understudied community and hope that more Freedmen descendants will document their own ancestral community as well.
