Re: 1 Indian home guard info
In Response To: 1 Indian home guard info ()

Hello Donald,

Could your ancestor have been known as Redmond Kernell? I ask because on the National Park Service database of Civil War soldiers, there was a Redmond Kernell.

That Kernell served in the 79th US Colored Infantry (New), which as you know was originally organized as the 1st Kansas Colored. (That is the same regiment that helped to win the Battle of Honey Springs for the Union Army. The 1st Kansas Colored was organized the same time that the Home Guards were organized, in Kansas at the beginning of the Civil War.

There are service records for the soldiers of the 79th that are easily accessed.

Note that the Park Service did not have the name of Redman Kernell, but I shall try to search a different way to see if another spelling surfaces.
