Re: John E. Crowell
In Response To: John E. Crowell ()
The Crowell name came from Probate records, and has been spelled both Cruel and Crowell. Crowell was on the 1867 Creek census, Broken Arrow. Eli Cruel lists his father as John Cruel by blood. His probate file listed his father John Cruel, deceased. On the Census card #89 of Elnora Crowell, her father was John Cruel and mother Sally. Probate lists Elnora as a mixed blood Creek. I have a picture of John and one of Eli's daughters which both have very distinctive eye features that are alike as well as other family members pictures in the Civil War time period that have that same feature. They also lived in the same area of Wagoner Co. Many of the Cruel's were owned by John's mother Sallie Prince and they all seem to have lived in the Ft. Gibson, Old Marshall area near Sand Town, Tullahassee Mission and Gibson Station areas and later Porter. I could be confused, research is hard to pinpoint especially the Creek Indian and Freedmen focus, that's why your forum is so important. I keep digging.
