BRAGG Family..The Last Slave Owner

Now, how come my family couldn't be this easy?

One day, I was surfing the web, and ran across the Special Collections Division of Arkansas, Fayetteville, AR., and saw that they had a 'bill of sale,' for some folks from my County and Township of research listed. I can't post the entire message because of the **do not reproduce with permission* notice, but, I will give you the 'jest' of what I found.

James T. Bragg had slaves in Clay Township, Bradley County, AR. in 1850, he died before the 1860 slave census came out. On December 31, 1860 his son Branch V. Bragg, the administrater of his estate sold 9 slaves, total of sale was $10,695.00. Among some of the slaves sold were
Sterling, sold to Robert Bragg for $875.00
Tempess, sold to Mary C. Black for $905.00
Amanda and child, sold to B.J. Bragg for $1720.00

On the 1870 Census, Bradley County, Clay Township:
Pg. 16, Stamped Pg 498B (lines 2-7)
BRAGG, Sterling, age 59

, Sallie, age 52

, Amanda, age 20

, Tempess, age 19

, Margret, age 9

, Rufus, age 5
A family separated, and reunited. This is not my family, but I truly hope it will be helpful to someone researching the 'Braggs' in Bradley County, AR., Clay township. I wonder if the purchasers of these *humans* ever went back to Branch Bragg and demanded their money back, after all, when this sale took place, the end of slavery was *right around the corner!* Oh well, too bad.

Have a Wonderful Weekend!
