Re: Contacting Descendants of Slave Owners
In Response To: Re: Contacting Descendants of Slave Owners ()
It is wonderful for me to read this thread. I am a White descendant of slave owners and am in the early stages of engaging in reparations for that history (e.g., figuring out what forms those reparations might reparations take). Right now, I'm trying to document my family's slave-owning history -- for me, for my family, and also for the descendents of the slaves themselves (the lines between "my family" and "the descendents of slaves" are blurry -- my great-great-grandfather had a separate family with one of his slaves, and that must have happened in many other instances as well).
I can't trace this history on my own: unfortunately, my family's slave-owning past is extensive and happened in multiple states. I also want to do it right so I can turn over records of slaves themselves (names, birthdays, unions, where people came from, where they were sold to, etc. as well as any information on the living conditions of these slaves) to an archive to help others trace their histories. Does anyone have any suggestions for excellent historians who might be willing to collaborate with me on this project? That would be so very helpful to me.
I would love to be a part of any meetings for descendents of slaves and slave owners; let me know how I can help.
