Re: Found Slaveowners
In Response To: Re: Found Slaveowners ()

Rose Mercer was an African American who served in the 17th Alabama Infantry with his brother-in-law Seth Mercer whose last name he took. Rose was the son of William Fails, a slave owner in Butler County, Alabama. Irena Fails, his half sister, was Seth's wife.

Rose later moved to Indian Territory and told a WPA inerviewer in the 1930's that he served with a Squire Hornbeck who had died a week earlier in Marietta, Oklahoma.

He said Hornbeck joined the Union Army was captured and forced to serve in the Confederacy.

This man may have been the Squite Hornbeak you are searching for.
