Slave Classification???

Duncan McArn of Jefferson County, MS, listed his slaves in family groups along with their ages on his personal inventory papers. McArn also gave the slaves a classification. I was wondering if anyone has seen this before? What are the qualifications for each class?

Examples:

"George and Suzy his wife. George about 45 with a lame knee and about 2nd or 3rd class hand. Suzy about 35, first class and their 5 children as follows Henry about 18, third class, Andrew 17, same class, Lina 14, Jim 11, Rila 10"

"Webster and Maria his wife. Webster 31, first class, Maria 23, third class and 2 children as follows, Caroline 5, Harisa 3"

This inventory list was written in 1863.
