Re: Think I found Slave owner Franklin county, VA

Hello all, I haven't been able to devote much time to geneology lately so it is good to be back!

Mona, thanks for your posting. My Robinsons are from Harrison County, WV. I have been able to go as far back as Hester Robinson (gg-grandmother). Hester was born in Morgantown, VA on April 10, 1840. While I am not 100% certain, I believe she may have been born into the Dever (Deaver) family. I have found Hester in the household of Arthur Critchfield Dever and his wife Ingaby Corder-Dever as early as 1850. Arthur's father owned slaves, as well as, his brothers and sisters. Slaverowners in WV and VA often under reported their "holdings". Hester had several children with Arthur Dever (Robert, Albert Lee, Elizabeth Bird, Lenora Gay and Frank) -- what is interesting to note is that Arthur and his wife had one child which died in infancy, it is amazing what our ancestors had to go thru. Anyway, a Dever family historian told me that the Robinsons (Robertsons) were cousins to the Devers. I have not found a connection between Hester and the Robi nsons but, I was wondering if she changed the family name after emancipation. Another interesting thing is that Arthur and Ingaby both left Hester and all of the children $$$ in each of their wills when they passed away.

Andrea
