How about looking at the people in the neighborhood, on the census sheets you found him, tracing them backwards. Sometimes families stayed close by, or there was a marriage between the families. Remember each year there was a different census taker. They spelled southern names the way THEY THOUGHT the person was pronoucing it. Black people weren't allowed to know how to read and write for a very long time. In the 1900's, is mainly when x-slaves children went to some type of school.
