Last night I watched a rerun of African Americans Lives with Dr. Henry Louis Gates. Dr. Gates was researching the background of actor, Don Cheadle. Don's family was owned by the Chickasaw Nation. When the Chickasaw Nation emancipated their slaves in 1866, the former slaves were left without a country. Oklahoma was not yet a state. Once OK became a state, the freedmen were given plots of land (40 acres). One of the towns mentioned was Wiley, Oklahoma. It was an all black town and Don's family had several acres of land.
