How were SWINDELL Slaves Acquired?

Hello,
As far as I've been able to determine, my ancestors were slaves on the Sam Swinell Plantation, in Columbus County NC. Before he settled in Columbus COunty, Sam's famiy stayed in Bladen county. Now there LOTS of Swindell's in Eastern NO, and I for one would like to know how and where Sam acquired his slaves.
