Re: Devereuax Slave Listing
In Response To: Re: Devereuax Slave Listing ()
I research the families of the slaveholders to learn about their slaves and, hopefully, learn about my slave ancestors. This has proven to be helpful to my family history research.
Mary is Mary Ann Devereux daughter of William Devereux of Ireland. She married William Elliott. Their son William St. John Elliott married Anna Frances Conner of the Conner family that were slaveholders of my great great grandfather. Anna was married two other times (Egbert Bell and William Ruffin). She owned several plantations including Black Hawk Place Plantation and Ballymegan Plantation, Concordia Parish, Louisiana.
Julien Sidney Devereux’s family is a different family. The immigrant of the Julien Sidney Devereux family came from Wales. The two families do connect further back in Devereux, France.
You are doing good work in following John William Devereux. I recall reading that he and his wife, Sarah Griggs, left their daughter in Louisiana. This daughter could have been Louisiana Devereux who married Henry Holcombe. Louisiana was born in 1803 and another daughter was born in 1808.
Take a good look at the families of the wives of John William and Julien Sidney. Some of the slaves come from the slaveholder's wive's families.
Locate a Family History Center (LDS) near you or a library where you can view - Records of Ante-Bellum Southern Plantations from the Revolution through the Civil War, Series G, Part I, Rolls 36-42 (published by University Publications of America, Frederick, MD).
Click on the link below or type it into your browser. Scroll down the page and click on “Records of Ante-Bellum Southern Plantations from the Revolution through the Civil War, Series G”
I hope this helps?
