Re: Galloway in VA (now WV) and MO
In Response To: Galloway in VA (now WV) and MO ()

Dear Mr Brown,

I believe James Galloway, Sr. to be a direct descendent of mine. He fought in the Revolutionary War and received a land grant(?) for his services in Virginia. He supposedly was there at the surrender of Lord Cornwallis in Yortown, Virginia.

What I am sure of, is that my great-great-great grandfather was born in Hampshire County, Virginia (W.V.) in 1798. His name was Charles Galloway.

I have read that James and family lived in the area for 15 years or more (?). He did appear in the census records you mentioned and held property in the county until some time after 1810. They left the area to go south and west. At around 1820 they ended up in Missouri, however I am not entirely sure this is absolutely correct.
The census records you mentioned show that he was a slave owner, I am not sure of how many nor whom.
James and wife supposedly had more than twenty children, though we have no confirmation of this.

My great-great grandfather, Charles, left Missouri, went to Illinois, eventually acquired land in Wisconsin and started a family, and then in 1852 emigrated to Oregon to settle in the Willamette Valley area.

Much of Charles life is a mystery to us all, especially his years in Virginia and his travels up to his time in the Midwest.
I do have picture of this man, and to me he appears to be of creole heritage, perhaps. We just don't know.
You couldn't guess it by looking at the family (white), but there is something in his picture that is intriguing.
Maybe you have something interesting of note, or could help solve a few mysteries.
To learn a little more about James, if it is the same man, would be icing on the cake.

Steve Galloway
