I have dealt with a family owned one and they were very helpful. They even sent me copies of death certificates (no charge). They also provided me a copy of the entry in their log book for my grandmother's funeral. It contained information such as: address, person in charge of funeral, cost of funeral, who paid for funeral, time and place of wake, date, time of funeral, where buried, etc.
I'm sure that funeral home to funeral home will vary though.
