I have SMITH's in the family tree on my mother's (non-AA) side. My GG-Grandma (maternal gm maternal gm) was a SMITH, but it was americanized from SMIT sometime after the family came from Holland. It's a real barecat to trace such a name when SMITH as it is spelled is usually traced back to England, Scotland and Wales.
When you try tracing in the census the name was commonly mispelled the German way too...SCHMITT. Arghh!
