Deciphering Southern dialects-SC

I took a trip to the Gullah Festival in SC and on a "Step On Tour", which means the tour guide road on our bus and guided the driver to areas of black history, I learned what certain words my grandmother spoke, actually meant in the time period she lived. I used to think how illterate our people were because they did not speak 'correct' english as I was taught. I had felt if only they had been allowed to go to school to learn the right way. Well right is not always right! I realized that the 'spoken word was correct for them'. Now the Gullah language is getting lost because the young people are moving away from the Gullah Culture. What I am suggesting is either go to your local library and get a book on Gullah Language or purchase the Gullah Bible that has translation of Gullah and english. It might help to decipher a lot of information you may find about the southern black folks.
