Yes it is very possible that folks can be listed as white on the census and not be- happens all the time. I too find it odd that they were buried in and African-American cemetery - especially in TN.

Many people "passed". Not all descendants are happy to find that out - grin - so don't worry about offending anyone here - we'll be happy to help you discover what can be found.
