My first question concerns Census Records that were released by the govt. a few years ago: At the time Records were released, I found easy and free access to them. Now I cannot find free access. It seems the only place I can get Census records now is through a paying website: ancestry.com, geneology.com and so on.
Can someone tell me -- is the general public still allowed access without charge to all Census records? IF SO -- could someone PLEASE tell me where?
My second question involves my family:
My family may have african american connections. The information is so convoluted that I can't really tell if I have the lists of family members under the correct relative, which makes it difficult to tell if the african american connection is in my direct line, which I hope is the case.
What I mean is -- the parents/grandparents listed MAY be those of a family member other than the one they are attached to -- maybe not even in my direct line because the info (when I found it) was clearer but has been messed up a bit, and I can't go back and find where it was w/o direct access to Census Records. The lists of parents/grandparents of SPEARS were listed under more than one of my family members -- possibly three.
They may actually be in an offshoot -- like, attached to a brother of my direct line...but that's iffy. I personally feel it IS my direct line because of the Cemetery records.
I have found the following. I apologize in advance if it is convoluted:
My direct KITE line is through the men.
My gggg grandmother is Matilda Spears.
My ggg grandmother is Cornelia Francis Smith. I think they are related by blood outside my direct line.
m ggg grandfather:
Cornelia's parents were listed as:
Calvin Morgan SMITH 1864 Tenn---Nancy Ruth SPEAR b Tenn. Both are listed as living with my ggg grandfather Burton in 1880.
Nancy SPEAR is listed as the daughter of Jesse SPEARS and Feribbe/Phereba HAYNES b 8/25/1848 d 2/18/1911, (both Jesse and Ferribe are buried in the all-black cemetery in Hawkins. Co. Tenn)
Jesse SPEARS parents: Samuel SPEARS b 1761 Halifax, NC---Sarah SPEARS(yes-same birth name) b abt 1765 Halifax, N C. (Jesse also may have had a brother-Kindred SPEARS). Samuel SPEARS mother: Rosina SPEARS b unknown---father unknown.
Sarah SPEARS parents: Kindred SPEARS b abt 1746 in NC---Elizabeth JONES b unknown. This Kindred's parents: James SPEARS b abt 1700 in Nansemond Co. VA---Elizabeth COKER [James SPEARS parents: James SPEARS---Ann DOUGHTIE].
Jesse Spears and Ferribe Haynes also possibly had another daughter Lucy SPEARS. Lucy's daughter was Eliza Jane Augusta "Gus" Lee b 8/25/1848 d 2/18/1911, married the uncle of my ggg grandfather (Burton)---Martin Van Buren "Tuck" KITE b 2/8/1843 d 12/8/1912.
It would also appear that Burton's mother Matilda SPEARS is part of the connection:
Matilda SPEARS (my gggg grandmother) b 1820 m George Sizemore KITE III, (the father of Eliza's husband Martin Kite above). I can't connect Matilda to the other SPEARS. (George had 22 children, 11 from Matilda).
Another possible connection to SPEAR/SPEARS:
my great-great grandmother Florence Augusta "Gussie" WILLIAMS parents were Brutus Williams b. abt.1852 Alabama, d. 1922 Texas---Mary Agnes "Mollie" SPEAR b. 5/19/1857 Pike Co. AL d. 6/14/1938 Oakhill Cem. Smithville, Bastrop Co. Texas 1880 Census. This is only ONE generation away from Cornelia Francis Smith, so you can see where I might feel there is also some possible connection since the Kites went from Tenn to Texas regularly.
I very much want to find connections to the SPEARS relatives if possible. If anyone can assist I would be so grateful.
