African-American/Cherokee family links?

Hi to all!

For anyone who thinks that there is a possibility that there is a Cherokee link to their African-American ancestors, the National Archives has a link to the Guion-Miller Roll Index, which is the Eastern Cherokee Roll of 1909.

This is an extensive listing of those persons who claimed Cherokee ancestry and filed for federal compensation. It covers numerous states as well as the Indian Territory.

I have found several of my African-American ancestors in Tennessee on this list. They each had claimed to have a parent (or grandparent) who was a member of the Cherokee tribe. Even if their claim was denied, the information that they had to provide included the names and birthplaces of their grandparents, parents, siblings, spouse, etc.

This has proven to be an invaluable research tool!

The Guion-Miller Roll Index can be found at:

Blessings to all!

Anita
