I'm glad you think I found the right family. As for race designations in the census it isn't unusual to see them vary from year-to-year. I have a feeling the enumerators didn't bother to ask people what race they considered themselves to be and may have just based race on appearance. Almost every African American was recorded as "negro" in the 1930 Census.
