Re: ADSIDE Name & Genealogy ?
In Response To: ADSIDE Name & Genealogy ? ()

Hello Michael,

You are right, your last name is very interesting and rare. The first record I find on of your last name belonging to a black person was in 1900 in Walton County Georgia. And they are only four of them. And they were:

Bell Adside born 1881 All born Ga.
Joe Adside born 1876
George Adsides born 1876
Nancy Adsides born 1825

Prior to 1900, I could not find any white or black persons with your last name anywhere in the US. That could mean a number of things. I am no expert on this but it would seem that the origin of your last name started with your family. Most black families after slavery took the last name of a slave owner. Now some chose their own last name if they did not want to take the slave owner's last name. Your name could have derived from a variation of the slave owner's last name or it could be that it was a name that your family got from somewhere else, like Africa. Or may be that they were never slaves. You would need to search the census by first name or by any variation of your last name prior to 1900 in order to possibly find more. In 1880, your family may have been using a different last name. God only knows, but it would take some hard work to find them in the prior cenus.
Now lets jump to 1930 in Fulton County, Ga in the city of Atlanta and I find the following:

ADSIDE, Robert Head age 40, born Ga. Parents born Ga. Occupation is Shooter, Industry is Fertilizer

Lizzie Wife age 38, born Ga. Parents born Ga.

Bessie Dau age 18

Odessa Dau age 12

Robert L. son age 10

WILLIE S. son age 8 born 1921/1922 (Your Father)

Jessie R. dau age 6

Anna dau age 3
In the 1920 in Walton County Ga. I find the following:

Adside, Robert L. Head age 22. Now there is a big difference here in age from 1930. That would raise some questions.

Lizzie Wife age 20

Dessa Dau age 2 1/2

Addison son age 3 1/2

Bessie dau age 6 1/2
Also in this census they are called Mulatto by the census taker which could mean that they were of a mixed heritage.

Some notes: It is unusual to see the youngest ones listed first and you don't normally see half ages listed. What would be a question to ask is what happen to Addison prior to the 1930 census because he is not in the 1930 census. Addison could have past away. That is just one conclusion and it may not be so. Now the difference in ages could be caused by the person giving the info to the census taker did not know the correct information.
Also, it appears that there several of your family members death certificates are available in Georgia. And they are:

You can order these certificates from the State of Ga.
Now as for as the Brown name is concern. Brown is a very common name and I was unable to connect the Browns you mentioned to each other.
Maybe if you can explain the connections a little better.

There are many Adside's still living in Ga.
Go to these sites and do a search

I hope this helps,
