Re: Malinda Marsalis
In Response To: Re: Malinda Marsalis ()
I have waited for over 10 years for someone to respond and give the right information regarding my Great Grandmother, Malinda Marsalis.
Golson got part of the story right Malinda (assumed name) Marsalis is one and the same Malinda Causey.
Mike, Usually when you are asking for help, you would give us the full name, approximate date of birth, known place of residence. I wasn't at first sure whether Ms was Mississippi or Missouri. However, you were very, very lucky in that your gggmother has an unusual name which made her fairly easy to track.
In the 1880 census, Malinda is now using the name Marsalis, and states that she is single. She lives in Amite, Mississippi with her 2 children, 4 year old daughter Dolsy, and 1 year old son Erasmus, they are both listed as mulatto, whereas she is listed as black.
William Erasmus Marsalis is married (wedlock) to Nannie Rosette Hughley; therefore at the time of the 1880 Us Census Amite Co, MS and at the time of their birth it would have been impossible for her to have been married, THIS IS CORRECT.
Mulatto is a designation to show genetic and blood mixture of European White Male and Black African Woman. The record as presented above is correct!
Grandpa Ras Morgan born Erasmus Marsalis and his sister and his sister Dolsy Marsalis aka Dolsy Reeves Thompson.
Ras and Dolsy are your blood relatives so was my uncles, aunts, my mother Artimease and us. Art Johns
Mom stated she had seen Ras father only once or twice in her lifetime and he ""Was A White Man"".
By 1910, Erasmus 'Ras' (30) is a widow using the last name of Morgan. He lives with his children Lessie(12), Lois(8), Ras(7), Alvis(6), Harold(4) and Elvin(3), also in the household is Malinda Marsalis who lists herself as a 50 year old widow (she was still single and never married in life).
Uncle Leslie was born around 1897 - 1998 to Ras Morgan (apparently Ras changed his several times around 1890 - 1897 before the birth of Uncle Leslie.
Erasmus (Mulatto) Ras Morgan marries Estell Brown in 1910; I found her in the home with her parents Scott and Lettie Brown in 1910 US Census Amite Co. MS.
In 1920 Ras(41) has remarried to Estella(35) and lives with children Leslie(21), Pearl(20) Lois(18), Erasmus(17), Alvis(16),Harold(14),Elvin(13),Ruby(8),Kerdna(6), Artima(5), Curtis(4), Crachear(3), Clather(1). And living with them is Matilda Marsalis (64).
Those named above are my Uncles and Aunts, although the names are incorrectly spelled.
A statement from my mother Artimease Morgan Johns "Grandma Melinde were never married"!
Malinda Causey aka Malinda Marsalis, my Great Grandmother appears to have been deceased sometime between 1920 and 1930 and I the information have gone to the grave with all of those listed above.
I would like to know where she is interred and where she is overladen!
Here is where the information got twisted...
The information BELOW is WRONG...
Malinda is working as a farm laborer and living next door to Dr. Thomas Marsalis and his family, with Erasmus Marsalis living nearby by with his wife and 5 children. Given the continuing proximity, one wonders if Erasmus might be the father of Malinda's children.
This paragraph and information is WRONG, ALSO...
In 1900 Malinda lists herself as a widow and is living with her son Erasmus 'Ras' Marsalis who is a widow living with his children; William (13), Helen (6), Mahalie(2) and 18 year old Samuel White (late wife's son?).
hope this helps you!
At a later date I shall try to contact Afrigeneas and present the right information for edification.
Respectfully and with humility I shall provide you as much information as I possibly can on the subject if you wish.
My wife and I shall be away in Northern Europe for several months of this year visiting her parents in the Rhineland, so, please respond ASAP.
Oh, by the way, If you would like my telephone number, just ask or you can just email me.
I make no judgement other than to just present the facts by way of documentation and some conjecture, I exist as a person to tell the story no matter how sweet or bitter it be.
