I cannot tell if he was freed before 1865. There is a census for 1866 colored pop. and he is on it listed as an Oliver. An 1870 census states that he lived next door to Samuel DGJ Moore a well known lawyer in Tuscaloosa at the time and that Lewis paid 300 for his land. If he's anOliver by birth then why does his death certificate state that his dad was a Booze and his mom was a Woods. I realize he may have been sold.
