Surnames and Family Research Forum

I am researching the lineage of my father, Terris Chester McDuffie. I have been unable to find any of his relatives. I don’t know what to do next

This is what I’ve been able to learn/surmise from information provide to me by a relative who researched the 1910 and 1920 census:

Patrick Newkirk, born 1871, North Carolina
John H. Newkirk, born 1858, North Carolina
Siblings—parents unknown

John married Luisa (no surname), 1882
They had the following children:
§ Ryals, 1883, North Carolina
§ Adella/Idella, 1886, Georgia or North Carolina
§ John H. II, 1891, Georgia or North Carolina
§ Lewis T., 1893, Georgia or North Carolina
§ Adie C, 1895, Georgia or North Carolina
§ Nancy P, 1898,  Georgia or North Carolina

Adella/Idella Newkirk is my paternal grandmother. Her two spouses were Bailey (given name and date unknown) and James McDuffie.
She had the following children:
§ Terris Chester McDuffie--my father (He shows up in the 1920 census as Terrice McDuffie)
Born 1907, Mobile, Alabama
Died 1968, Holmes County, Fl
Reared in Jacksonville, Florida
1920 census shows he resided with grandparents John and Luisa Newkirk
A Tellis Chester shows up on 1910 census  with the same 1907 birth date (I suspect this is my father). His place of birth is listed as Mississippi. He resided, at the time, with his grandparents, John and Luisa Newkirk
§ Loyd/Lloyd McDuffie, 1910
§ Henry R. McDuffie, 1911
§ Christine Tanner (probably husband’s surname)

§ Lucille Newkirk (believed to be the daughter of  Patrick Newkirk and Emma) born 1906
Died Dec. 1964, Palm Beach, Florida.
§ Pearlie Mae Newkirk, Born 1914, granddaughter of John and Louisa Newkirk, died 1952, Palm Beach, Florida.
