Re: Lyles in Lancaster Cty SC
In Response To: Lyles in SC ()
There are several possibilities for Harriet - I see "baby" in:
LYLES, CHARLOTTE (1860 U.S. Census)
and Harriet in:
LYLES, ELIZABETH (1870 U.S. Census)
Have you checked the county for birth records?
If she is a blood relation - that means that someone in the family had an inter-racial relationship and acknowledged it. If it was an unmarried woman - there may be chancery court records - or bastardy bonds.
I don't see a slave ownership record for tha family - but the records for 1850 and 1860 aren't coming up - would have to know more about the white Lyles family. Were they slave owners?
Have you checked free negro register for Harriet - she may have been registered?
She could also have been adopted. Or raised to be a servant - hard to tell from the skimpy census evidence.
Thanks for posting, and we'll try to help you dig for more information.
