Re: City Directories
In Response To: City Directories ()

City Directories as William states "it's been very helpful in my research!"

An AMEN to William who helped me fill in the missing pieces to some family oral history through City Directories.

My family history stated a 2nd great grandfather had gone to California driving a wagon, in a wagon train, in the late 1850's or early 1860's. We had some proof of this thru an estate settlement dated 1864 when "William Adams of California purchased his father's estate from his siblings with $3,000 cash in hand."

We located William in Sacramento, CA in the 1870 Census, found his death notice in the Sacramento Daily Union (Aug 1871), then William came up with pages from the 1861 & 1868 Sacramento City & County Directories that placed William Adams, colored from Ohio, born ca 1818, not only in Sacramento, but his occupation (wagon driver), where he resided and worked (Golden Eagle Hotel).

Now thanks to fellow AfriGenean, William Carson, and City Directories we have some "convincing" evidence to support the oral history.

Thanks William & AfriGeneas......."ain't" networking great!!!!!
