The Quakers in Pasquotank made themselves a terrible nuisance to the North Carolina officials by relentlessly filing petitions against slavery, stating that they were an abomination against mankind; and they regularly acquired slaves, either through buying them or being donated by other sympathizers, and arranged to send them off to other states where they could live as free people.

The Petition of Joseph Wilson Inhabitant of the said County Humbly Sheweth
That your Petitioner having under his care or possession A Negro woman by the Name of Rachel wife of Luke (formerly the property of Thomas Jordan Senr. & who hath been liberated by this Court by the name of Luke Howard) and her five Children (to wit) Jesse about 10 years of age, Keziah about 8 years of age, Ruth about 6 years of age, Rachel about 4 years of age, & John about 2 years old.
Your Petitioner Humbly Request that you would please to grant an order an order that the said Rachel & her Childrn be liberated under such restrictions as other persons of Color-
And your Petitioner as in duty bound will ever thankfully Acknowledge &c.

State of No. Carolina,
Know all men by these presence that We Jos. Wilson, Thomas Jordan & Joseph Bundy are held and firmly bound unto the Justices of the County aforesaid in the sum of Five hundred Pounds, to be paid to the said Justices, or their Successors in Office; To the which payment well and truly to be made, We bind ourselves, our heirs, excecutors and administrators, jointly and severally, firmly by these presents, Sealed with our Seals, and dated this 6th day of March Anno Dom 1800.
The Condition of the above Obligation is such that Whereas Jess about ten years of age, Keziah about Eight years, Ruth about six years of age, Rachel about four years of age, and John about two years of age Children of Luke Howard who have been this day by the Worshipful the County Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions for the County aforesaid, liberated and Set Free in as full and ample Manner as the laws of the said State will admit. Now if the above Named Joseph Wilson, Thomas Jordan & Joseph Bundy their Heirs Executors or Administrators, or any of them, do and shall from time to time, and at all times until the said Jesse, Keziah, Ruth, Rachael, & John shall severally arrive to the age of Twenty one Years of Age, Acquit discharge, and save harmless, the Oversears of the Poor and inhabitants of the County aforesaid, from all Costs, Charges and Troubles Whatsoever for and by reason of the Liberation of the sd. Jesse, Keziah, Ruth, Rachael & John, and of and from all Suits Charges and demands Whatsoever touching and Concerning their liberation, then the Above obligation to be Void, otherwise to remain in full force and Virtue.
