My guess is you are correct about the Edward Fox in 1880 Fauquier who "knows nothing of home" as being the missing son of Jemima - since Fauquier is so close to Loudoun. There is no one there by that name in 1870. Had young Edward died - he would be listed in Loudoun death records. The notation about a Yankee soldier father was very odd - there is no other listing like that in Loudoun birth records.
Your guess about Jemima from Loudoun being your Jemima is a good one since ages match exactly and both are listed as mulatto. You might want to check with Balch library in Loudoun to see what family files they have on FOX. Mary Fishback would know if there are any living descendants in the area.
There are quite a few FOX records for Loudoun - one branch were FPOC and fairly well off in Snickerville, and are listed in local histories. Though not related to my lines - they were neighbors of my family and I've kept an eye on that surname.
