I agree that often nicknames have no relationship whatsoever to the person's real name. They are often descriptive in the same way that names were hundreds (thousands?) of years ago. Or they are connected to some story in that person's life.
Saturday night I attended an annual banquet held in Los Angeles by folks who are originally from my home town. Everybody introduces themselves and Ulysses (about 70 years old) introduces himself as such, but every year catcalls of "Serp!!" usually ring out. Now just imagine a census taker asking his name of someone who knew him ONLY by that nickname?
