I am almost finished with "Slaves without Masters" by Ira Berlin--who I believe wrote the forward for Paul Heinegg's book-- and I am amazed how people of color managed to salvage anything resembling a family in the antebellum South. It took some creative planning to keep the black codes off your person and family.
