Based on the information you posted, here are several possibilities from the 1930 Census. Talking to your grandfather may help to pinpoint if one of them is the right James Young.

1930 Census, Brooklyn, NY, Burgen Street

Young, James, age 22, single, born in No. Carolina, occupation: laborer for Coffee Co.; living with Ira & Martha Cheek, also from N.C. Ira is reported as James's brother-in-law, so James Young and Martha Cheek appear to have been brother and sister. It appears that the Cheeks came to NY from No. Carolina about 1926.

1930 Census, Manhattan, NY, 121 St.

Young, James, age 23, single, born in So. Carolina, occupation: Elevator operator; living with older brother, David & Marie Young, also from So. Carolina.

1930 Census, Manhattan, NY, W. 121st St.

Young, James, age 21, single, born in So. Carolina, occupation: laborer for city streets, living with John & Louisa Little. His relation to them is just reported as "boarder".

1930 Census, Manhattan, NY, Seventh Ave.

Young, James D. & Cora, both 25, married, born in NY, living with Frank & Zara Oliver. Listed as "Roomers".

I'll be curious to know if one of these James is the right one. If so, then you may be able to trace back further - to So. or No. Carolina.
