Based on what he said in the article, he already knew of reports of perceived mistreatment of other patrons at the same handful of establishments. Maybe he wanted to test the waters to see if anything would happen to him. Then he reacted as most people would have, with indignance, since he was both a paying customer AND not bothering anyone else.
Several years back, a black cop said he had heard of minorities (especially men) being singled out and mistreated by white cops in a county outside of his jurisdiction. He purposely drove into the perceived hornet's nest until he was pulled over by a white cop for apparently no other reason than "DWB". After failing to comply with any of the white cop's orders, the black cop's face was ultimately shoved (by the white cop) through the plate glass window of a storefront. Initially, the public sympathy was with the black cop and outrage was directed toward the white cop and those despicable practices. Even so, the tide of sympathy waned after it came out that the black cop had purposely gone there hoping for a confrontation.
