"Informal" Name Changes
In Response To: Re: Research: The Good, Bad, and Ugly of it! ()
Piggybacking on this topic, I know that my husband's family is not the only one with an informal name change. I'd love to hear more stories.
In his, his paternal great-grandfather was born Henry AKERS in Beulah, AL. He had a number of brothers and sisters who all shared the same name. We don't know what happened. Was his mother widowed? Divorced? We are unsure, but I hope to uncover it in my research. She ended up married to a man with the surname BENNETT. All but one of the children took on the new surname informally. The lone AKERS dissenter was a male child, and I believe his descendants are still out there somewhere.
The result is that almost all the male members of that family and their resulting male descendants still carry the BENNETT surname--including my husband--and have since been removed from their original heritage and surname of AKERS.
