Flower girls are still in use today in many Southern Black Churches. Their roll is akin to that of pallbearer. Usually the younger ladies of the Church are in charge of actually handling the flowers and many times the older ladies or "mothers" of the church are still listed as "honorary" flower girls. These duties are most often handed to young ladies whose families were close to the deceased though not necessarily relatives. They are worth inspecting in terms of genealogy to be sure.
