Hey Professor Dru!
I have been following your blog WDYTYA series with interest! I had a bit of extra time so I decided to see if I could find your Bullock ancestors on the 1920 or 1930 censuses. I think I have found them in 1920 on Heritage Quest!
Louvenia BULLOCK age 56 is listed as living in the Nutbush Township in Vance Co. NC. She is the Head of household, listed as a Widow. Also listed in the household is son, James(33); daughter, Chamie(20); daughter, Nancy(18); and son, Joseph(12).
The info from Heritage Quest is: 
1920 > NORTH CAROLINA > VANCE > NUTBUSH
