Anatole Broyard by Henry Louis Gates
I posted a link to the article by Skip Gates on Anatole Broyard on the Writers Forum and the Afrigeneas' mailing list. (Sorry, as a writer I am very sensitive to copyright. I won't post the full article here since it would violate the copyright laws and compromise Afrigeneas.)
If you haven't visited the Writers Forum, please do. There is an earlier posting about Nella Larsen whose work includes "passing".
However, if you click on the link below, you'll be able to read Gates' article, "The Passing of Anatole Broyard". I've read a few criticisms about Gates for "outing" Broyard. Unfortunately, it is still "fashionable" to criticize one of America's important historians on the black experience. Gates' article simply presents the man as he was.
Passing is an emotional subject for African Americans.
