Re: BISHOP JOSEPH SIMEON FLIPPER
In Response To: BISHOP JOSEPH SIMEON FLIPPER ()
Festus Flipper, Virginia-born father of West Point graduate Henry Ossian Flipper (1856-1940) and A.M.E. bishop Joseph Simeon Flipper, probably is related to a family headed by Joseph and Harriet Flippo in Caroline County, Virginia. Festus Flipper was taken from Virginia to Georgia by slaveholder Ephraim Ponder. Both Joseph Flippo in Virginia and Festus Flipper in Georgia had sons named Festus and Joseph. In 1870 neighbors and probable relatives of Joseph and Harriet Flippo in Virginia included Walker and Patsy Taliaferro. Their son Walker named three of his children Henry, Joseph, and Harriet. The name (Philippi, Flippo, Flipper) derives from a family of Virginia slaveholders including Joseph, Gideon, Addison, and Littleton Flippo.
