Re: Underground Railroad in Delaware
In Response To: Underground Railroad in Delaware ()
Ziba Ferris (1786-1875), named after his father Ziba (1743-1794) had a daughter Mary (born 1820) who married William Sellers (b. 1824), These were all members of Wilmington Monthly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends and related to various members of the Ferris family who were engaged in anti-slavery activities, and also, I believe, to Thomas Garrett, who was clearly involved with the Underground Railroad in Wilmington, but I don't have any specific information that either Ziba Ferris or his son-in-law William Sellers were directly involved in the Underground Railroad. They might have been, but I just don't know. The Sellers family came from Darby, in Delaware County, PA, and some of them were reportedly involved in URR activities there. (Darby and Wilmington are probably less than twenty miles distant-- a freedom seeker leaving Thomas Garrett's in Wilmington might be able to get to Darby on foot in a day. ) The Wilmington Meeting records are here at Friends Historical Library of Swarthmore College. If you have information linking either Ziba Ferris or William Sellers to the Underground Railroad, I'd be intersted in knowning about it. Chris Densmore
