Underground Railroad Research Forum

UGRR station in West Virginia 1840s

I came across a fascinating article entitled: In slavery Days: Once Famous Station on the "Underground Railroad."

It is about a 2-story log house in the "West Virginia hills" that was an Underground Railroad station kept in the 1840s by John Mitchell, an abolitionist. The house had an opening in the middle of the lower story. There was also a secret underground hiding place.

Unfortunatly the article does not give the exact location of the house. One clue was that at the time of the article one of the residents of the house was a man by the name of Bentley.

The article states that there were "Twenty-seven stopping places between Mitchell's and Ohio." Hope this information will help someone.

The article with accompanying drawings was in the Daily Journal (Telluride, San Miguel County, Colorado) Sept 8, 1902 newspaper, page 4. I found the article online by searching the Website for Colorado's Historic Newspaper Collection. See below:
