Re: Defining the Underground Railroad
In Response To: Defining the Underground Railroad
() Dear George, I completely agree with you about the importance of exploring all areas of resistence to slavery by flight. And I even think it is a good idea for the NTF to do so. I only disagree that the best way to do it is by calling all resistence to slavery by flight "Underground Railroad" activity. I would absolutely support the NTF in " studying the full range of experiences accross the continent and thereby better understanding the importance and unique position of the traditionally known UGRR in the Mid Atlantic...." I just think that calling every experience Underground Railroad blurs distinctions and makes that study inaccurate. I would strongly support the NTF in any way I could if it simply changed its labels so that they were more accurate. My friends who are descendants of the Seminole Negro Indian Scouts would be overjoyed to have their Cemetery recognized by the NTF in an accurate manner. If they had a category that covered other forms of escape from slavery that were not specifically UGRR, we would gladly accept that designation for the cemetery, The road to freedom that lead to Mexico was extremely important and is almost unknown and deserves a great deal of attention and study - it should just be accurate, thats all. Take care,
