Underground Railroad Research Forum

Underground Railroad Tours/Douglas County, KS

Underground Railroad Tours will be given in Douglas County, Kansas on August 15th and August 22nd this year during the annual Civil War on the Western Frontier Days in Lawrence, Kansas.

On an air-conditioned bus tour Underground Railroad sites where lives were risked for freedom's sake. Hear historic accounts of "Bleeding Kansas" when Lawrence was the "abolitionist capital" and Quantrill was a "double-agent" rescuing freedom seekers and then selling them back into slavery.

The two-hour tours are led by nationally-known artist, Wayne Wildcat, his wife, local historian, Tolly Wildcat and Archivist/local historian, Judy Sweets.

One highlight of the tour will be a stop at the former Grover's barn where John Brown arrived in January 1859 with twelve freedom-seekers and a newborn baby. Reservations are recommended.
