As chairman of the Black History Committee of the Madison County, Indiana Historical Society I am trying to prove (or disprove) the possibility of UGRR activities taking place in Madison County. We know that the great abolitionist Frederick Douglass was mobbed and maimed for life while in Madison County. That is well documented in his writings. The people who helped save his life were both Quaker and non Quaker. Many of them came from Chester County, Pennsylvania to Pendleton, Madison County, Indiana and were involved in UGRR activities in Chester County. It seems feasible that they were also involved with the UGRR in Madison County as well. But, I can find no clear documentation except for the writings of Frederick Douglass. It is said he came here at least 3 different times and he was very fond of his friends in Madison County.
Anyone who has any further information or suggestions of how to search this fact further I would be pleased to hear from.
Thank you for any help rendered.
