Underground Railroad Research Forum
Harriet Tubman
![]() I am so happy to hear about this forum - it is sorely needed! There are so many people doing important research on the Underground Railroad all over the country and in Canada. Many are working in relative isolation, so I hope this network will facilitate sharing of research, resources, and mutual support. I have just completed the first, deeply researched adult biography of Harriet Tubman in sixty years. Utilizing archival records, including hundreds of never-before-used letters, diaries, journals, federal, state and local records, as well as unpublished interviews and family material located in scores of libraries, museums, archives, court houses, etc., I have been able to document Tubman's remarkable life in vivid detail. The title of my book is "Bound for the Promised Land: Harriet Tubman, Portrait of an American Hero," due out in December from Ballantine Books. I have been fortunate to uncover many details of Tubman's rescue missions, revealing the identites of scores of her friends and family members who claimed liberty through her help. Please check out my website, www.harriettubmanbiography.com, where you will see Tubman's "runaway" notice posted by her enslaver, Eliza Ann Brodess, on October 5, 1849, as well as information on some of Tubman's "passengers."
