Re: family tree maker inquiry

Chiquentia,

I am still back on version 10 from 2002 so this may be dated information. I recall that FTM incorporated a feature to specifically backup to cd-r/w but I fould the feature to be a little unusual but I can't recall why. FTM has 2 files for each family files you have. So if you have a Smith family file then you would have a smith.FTM and a smith.FBK (backup) file. If you also have a Jones family file the you would similarly a jones.FTM and a jones.FBK file. I have all of my family files in a seperate directory from the FTM program files which are usually in C:\FTW.
In my case I have a C:\FTM-FILES where I keep my *.FTM and *.FBK files as well as any other files I want to preserve (scanned documents, pictures, etc). When I want to do a backup I just open my cdwriter program (in my case RecordNow). I insert my blank cd click-on DataDisc then drag and drop my FTM-FILES folder to the RecordNow window. In this scenario, you're limited to 600MB of files backed-up. A DVD-R would allow you to backup 4GB of data.
