I am studying the Battle of Missionary Ridge (Civil War) and ran across thisi n Harper's Weekly newspaper dated Dec. 19,1863, page 813.
The Storming of Missionary Ridge, November 25, 1863 by the Fourth Corps

"The colored sergeant of the 79th Indiana, Henry C. Lawrence carried his colors far in advance of his regiment, which was the first to commence the ascent. The whole army are admiring him."
