[AL] Sixth Ave Baptist Church B'ham
He keeps looking up
There aren't too many people who know more about the history of Birmingham's largest black church than the Rev. John T. Porter.
Porter, 73, was pastor of the 5,000-member Sixth Avenue Baptist Church from 1962 to 2000. This year, he published a history called "Keep Looking Up: The History of Sixth Avenue Baptist Church, 1881-2001," co-written with Nathan Hale Turner Jr., a member of the church and a copy editor at The Birmingham News.
It draws heavily on Porter's experiences. "A lot of it is my personal journey and things I remember about the church," Porter said.
