Susan Strickland's grandmother fled to Riverside from Georgia in 1903 after she had the audacity to complain to the Georgia governor's office about discriminatory treatment that relatives faced.
Although Riverside was a less dangerous place for blacks to live, African-Americans in the Inland area still faced segregated schools and neighborhoods and were shut out of many jobs.
Today, Strickland seeks to preserve the history of the struggles of African-Americans like her grandmother, people who helped build the Inland area but are largely forgotten.
