1790s: Slave families live in San Antonio and La Bahia
1821: Stephen F. Austin makes his initial proposal to the Mexican government for land grants in Texas
1823, January 4: Mexico passes the Imperial Colonization Law outlawing the slave trade in Texas
1824: First Black Codes are enacted in the region
1835-1836: Texas Revolution results in the independence of Texas from Mexico
1836-1845: Texas is an independent republic
1837: Texas Black Codes are strengthened
1845, December 29: Texas enters the Union as a slave state
1846: Texas creates a formal slave patrol system
1861, February 23: Texas secedes from the Union and joins the Confederacy
1865: Texas Governor Andrew Jackson Hamilton declares African Americans equal with whites before the law
March: Freedman's Bureau is established in Texas
June 19: Confederate resistance and slavery end in Texas
1867: African Americans cast 35,952 votes for a constitutional convention
1867-1870: Texas is administered by Union troops as part of Military District #5
